Swiss artist Fabian Oefner recently undertook an amazing photography project that shows what appears to be exploding cars. The series, which Oefner calls Disintegrating, is on display at the M.A.D. Gallery.

What appear to be real cars are actual scale models of the originals. He painstakingly cut into the models and took out each part. He then photographed each component in a specific position above the car and pieced it all together to give the illusion that the car was exploding. Oefner said that each of the images took about two months to create.

The cars he chose to deconstruct include a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe with gullwing doors, a 1961 Jaguar E-Type, and a 1967 Ferrari 330 P4.

Oefner also did another series called Hatch, which make it look like the cars are bursting out of a shell. He describes it as his interpretation of cars being “born.”
