Love for classic cars is stronger than ever, with a long list of gorgeous, classic models selling for record amounts at West Coast classic car auctions, particularly in Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel. In fact, about $340 million was spent at these auctions in August alone.
Gooding & Company, one of the nation’s leading car auction companies, reportedly sold up to $129,789,000 in luxury, classic cars, with a variety of model types driving up that number. Specifically, Ferrari vehicles were a huge seller.
A 1959 250 GT Competizione was purchased for just over $18 million, a 1960 250 GT short wheel base Berlinetta was purchased for $13.5 million, and a 1950 Ferrari 166 MM was purchased for about $5 and a half million.
Additionally, Bonhams sold more than $33 million in classic cars, with a 1931 Bugatti Type 51 Gran Prix Racer model selling for $4 million; and RM-Sotheby’s made $117.9 million, selling more than 80 percent of their cars.
In fact, RM-Sotheby’s was proud to announce a new record: a 1955 Jaguar D-Type that won the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans was sold for nearly $22 million, the highest auction record ever for a British automobile.
