A local attorney appeared on the “Lowcountry Live!” segment of the local channel 4 news.  David Aylor gives tips on how not to be scammed when buying a used car.  He speaks about the “as is” and lemon laws, and provides steps to take to make sure you are purchasing a quality car.

Here is the  release from WCIV:

CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV)—This week on Trial Tuesday, Charleston attorney David Aylor gave us the low down on used cars and how you can be an informed consumer when it comes to purchasing a used vehicle.

It would seem common sense, but first things first.  Make sure that you are purchasing the car from a reputable source.  If you are planning to buy it from a friend or family member, its your job to make sure the regular maintenance has been performed on the car.  Maybe take it for a test drive and be sure there are no weird noises; that it drives ok, and that all the major parts inside the vehicle work.  He says that you also want to make sure that you understand the “as is” laws as they are stated in South Carolina.  Understanding the law when it comes to purchasing used cars is your defense when it comes to getting your money back if something shady were to occur.

Review of the Used Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry has been a continuous leader for years in the midsize family sedan class by being a reliable and comfortable vehicle for millions. Whether traveling alone or with family, the Camry offers ideal features and space for both.

The 2007- 2011 Camry is available in four trim options: Base, LE, SE, and XLE.  The Base, LE, and XLE trim levels include a 169 horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.  The SE model has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 179 horsepower.2008 Toyota Camry XLE Sedan

All Camrys are front-wheel drive and have a six speed manual transmission as standard, except the XLE which only comes with a six-speed automatic. Manual transmissions receive 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Automatic’s fuel economy drops slightly to 32 mpg highway.

The exciting option available for LE, SE, and XLE models is the 3.5-liter V6 engine which outputs an outstanding 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. The impressive powerful engine option is ranked the best in the midsize family sedan segment. Fuel economy on this engine is still remarkable at 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

The Base  model comes equipped with a multitude of standard features. Air conditioning, High Solar Energy-Absorbing glass, washer-linked variable intermittent windshield wipers, 16-inch steel wheels, power windows and locks, and even cruise control come standard. The LE model adds multi-adjustable driver’s seat, metallic-style interior trim with chrome accents, remote keyless entry, and trunk-release.

The SE standard features include integrated foglamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual rear exhaust outlets, and sport fabric-trimmed seats. The XLE includes leather-trimmed seats, wood-grain style interior trim with chrome accents, 40/20/40 split manually reclining rear seats, and AM/FM six disc CD player with MP3 capability and eight speakers.

The 2002 – 2006 Toyota Camry Models had a choice of three engines.  First is a 154 hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder.  Next, available on the LE and XLE trim levels, is a 190 hp 3.0 V6 engine. Last, the SE trim includes a 210-hp, 3.3-liter V6.
